Cathay Pacific’s story began on September 24, 1946, when American Roy C. Farrell and Australian Sydney H. de Kantzow founded the airline in Hong Kong. The airline’s first aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 nicknamed “Betsy,” was purchased by Farrell at Bush Field in New York and is now permanently exhibited in the Hong Kong Science Museum as a testament to the airline’s pioneering spirit.
Legend has it that the airline’s distinctive name was conceived by Farrell and a group of foreign correspondents at the Manila Hotel bar. The name combines “Cathay,” the ancient name for China, with “Pacific,” reflecting Farrell’s vision that the airline would one day fly across the Pacific Ocean.
The airline’s early operations included passenger flights to regional destinations like Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, and Shanghai. In 1948, expansion accelerated when Butterfield & Swire (now known as the Swire Group) acquired a 45% stake in the company and took over management responsibilities.
